or a Hobby Business Person?

In today's economic climate it is too expensive to not work with a professional. Does the person you are considering working with have the minimums?

  • business cards, not the home computer and printer variety
  • office with desk, not a favorite coffee shop
  • Education and traing. Backgound counts but only goes so far.
  • How much real experience do they have?
  • Are they doing it for extra cash or a career. And how committed are they?
  • Do they have support staff? This does not necessarily include the spouse though I know several who have a working spouse partner.
  • Does the professional come in looking like you expect them to? If your professional does not arrive looking professional, why are your considering them? Business savy is the way of the world, don't expect less from real estate or construction professionals. If your painter showed up in greasy jeans what would your impression be? If they show up in white clothes with a Sherwin Williams logo and paint splotches you wouldn't blink and eye.

It is very competitive right now. There are lots of people who would like to earn your business and are willing to work for it. Others are hobby business people who will do it if it is easy but probably screw it up if it is too much work because they won't do the due diligence. The theory is that 10% make 90% of money. Meet the 10% but still make sure they are credible!

Re:Credible and Professional
Hey Trey.....it is very common for me to meet clients to do paperwork at coffee shops or over lunch. I don't think that has anything to do with if I do it for profession or hobby (it is my profession, btw). This is because our company and all of our agents work out of our homes. I have a home office, and have met clients here. We also have relationships with lenders and title companies where we can use their conference rooms. But, I've found coffee shops to actually be much more comfortable and work just great.

Otherwise, I agree, in all markets this should this should be a profession and not a hobby and those looking for real estate services should work with people who know what they are doing.
