I am frequently asked by prospective customers how much I charge per square foot. I recently taught an Institute of Residential Marketing course for Builders, Developers and Realtors. One of the chapters was titled Customer Value and Marketing and provided a methodology for measuring value other than by price per square foot.

As a Builder Home Builder, I know Im supposed to be informing you about building. But to help me do that, I am asking you to inform me about you. Trey recently asked you when you thought the Boise Real Estate Market would recover. As a Builder in the Boise, Idaho MSA and an instructor for the National Association of Home Builders Institute of Residential Marketing, I would like to ask you a few more questions so I can better understand our local housing market and, more specifically, you the home buyer.

As I have stated in previous posts, housing affordability is a complicated issue. Building affordable housing is not simply a matter of builders building less expensive homes. It requires the cooperation of a number of parties, including but not limited to state and local governments, land owners both those selling developable land and those living adjacent to that land, lenders, Realtors, and the home buyers themselves. Today we will discuss the home buyers.

I received an email this week from National Association of Home Builders Public Affairs staff asking for input with respect to consumer protection strategies. They asked for my thoughts about what potential home-buyers can do protect themselves if good, reputable builders unexpectedly run into financial problems and cannot complete a job. For example: what kinds of questions should a potential client ask? What third party sources exist that can offer object evaluations of a builders financial stability? So, I thought I would share my reply with my BuildingCredibility.com blog readers.
