Boise's Better Business Bureau
Main / Idaho Real Estate Insights

The largest consumer advocacy but are they really helpful.

Many people ask what the difference is between BuildingCredibility.com(BC) and the BBB. BC offers a Credibility Score Credibility Score and BBB offers a Reliability Report Reliability Report. The BBB is one source that should not be overlooked for a business report card. The problem is that a business on the BBB radar is at best satisfactory. They will share if there are any complaints against a company and if that issue was resolved? Question- what if there are none? There is not a conclusion that you can draw form this information. We can only determine that one has complained. We don't actually know if there have not been any unsatisfied clients nor do we know if there any satisfied clients?

What consumers really need to know is does a company consistently deliver what its clients expected? Every company has had a client that for whatever reason was not satisfied. This is the problem I have with a reliaility report. There is no way you can be in business and not have a dissatisfied clients, even if it is just a little glitch or a personality problem. So if someone complains, what does that mean. Obviously, if the company is has numerous complaints or even worse has compalints regularly, that company has a business problem. Again every company will have a disatisfied client but if you can't bury them with multiple clients who are excited about your product you have a business problem.

Now, let's discuss a home. A person who is making an emotional purchase and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars. I would like to commed the home builders that are members of this site and have opened themselves up to be rated and reviewed by clients. For the consumer this is the best advertising any builder can do. If prospective buyers can read what clients are experiecing they don't need a big color ad- it is black and white. And the more testimonials we can read the more credible the builder becomes.

In conclusion, you should check the BBB but if there are no complaints don't stop there. You must talk to past clietns before you know that the builder constently delivers. That also means that if you meet someone who compains you must use your best judgement to evaluate the negative builder feedback.

Re:Boise's Better Business Bureau
Trey,

I have been a member of the Better Business Bureau since I started Chuck Miller Construction Inc. and, as you know, I was one of the firste Builders to sign on to BuildingCredibility.com. The main reason I signed on was because of the opportunity BuildingCredibility.com provides for clients to provide positive feedback on their experience.

I support the Better Business Bureau and use it myself to check out other businesses with whom I might be considering working. However, as you noted, the only thing you can learn from their website is whether or not the company is a member and whether or not a complaint has ever been filed against the company. I have actually been involved in a situation where I contracted with a company who had had no complaints filed against them only to be extremely disappointed with their service.

So I agree with you. Buyers should check the BBB, but they should not stop there. They should contact the local home builders association - in Ada County the Building Contractors Association of SW Idaho and in Canyon County the Snake River Valley Building Contractors Association. They should also check out the Idaho Board of Occupational Licensing. But I always encourage potential buyers to ask for a list of customer references. BuildingCredibility.com is a great source for those references.
